How do these events fit into my school’s wellness policy?
Both the Kansas Coordinated School Health (KCSH) program and the Kansas School Wellness Policy Model Guidelines emphasize the need to engage family and community members.
How will Kansas families benefit from these events?
The importance of family and community involvement in supporting a healthy school environment has long been recognized by government agencies and health professionals. These events will provide accurate information and fun learning activities that will assist parents in guiding their families to practice healthy living. Families will also have fun participating in a health-centered, family-friendly, school-sponsored event..
All Kansas schools participating in one or more school meals programs will have the opportunity to apply for a mini-grant to help financially support a Family Fun, Food, and Fitness event. Preference will be given to schools that have never received a Family Fun, Food and Fitness mini-grant, are willing to match part or all of the mini-grant funds and/or show initiative in sustaining a Family Fun, Food, and Fitness event beyond a single event.
Kansas Team Nutrition, will provide an event planning guide and a $250 grant to 40 selected schools (20 in the fall semester and another 20 in the spring semester) to help cover the costs of holding the event. Most events can be conducted for this amount; however, if more money is necessary the host school is encouraged to look for donations and funding from parent and community organizations.
Family Fun, Food & Fitness Event applications are available must be submitted to KSDE no later than September 17, 2010 for fall 2010 funding or January 7, 2011 for spring 2011 funding.
Kansas Team Nutrition has developed a Family Fun, Food & Fitness Event Guide which provides instructions for planning and promoting a health-centered, family-friendly, school-sponsored event and includes specific instructions detailing both nutrition and fitness activities.
